The Golden Baritone
„Hvorostovsky is not only the greatest baritone of the world, but he is exceptionally handsome, too. …(….) His characteristic Russian look and his highly emotional singing can drive more sensitive audience members out of their minds” (Miami Herald)
„Yes, this is what we have been waiting for! – sighed the strict and sharp music critic of the New York Times after the opening night of Il Trovatore in the Met in 2015 when Dmitri Hvorostovsky, returning from a treatment needed because of a severe illness , made a sensation with his Conte di Luna. As the singer, proud and elegant, appeared on the stage, he was received with endless Bravos and thunderous applause. The artist whose refined baritono voice and Siberian stature fills the stage with radiance slowly let a smile brighten his face. At the end of the performance a shower of white roses and the tears of fellow artist Anna Netrebko greeted him.
The Russian Voice, the golden baritone, one of the highest-value „export goods” of Russian music is a genuine Siberian. He was born in Krasnoyarsk in 1962, and according to family legend he was already singing at the age of four. No wonder – his chemical engineer father is an excellent pianist and has got a beautiful bariton voice . Their house was filled with music, with a big collection of records – Tito Gobbi, Enrico Caruso, Maria, Callas, Ettore Bastianini, Fedor Shalyapin, Mario Lanza and others. „
(A correct summary follows about his musical education and his career as a singer. The writer, Anna Tóth, does not intrude into his private life.)
Then about the program he brings to Budapest: „Hvorostovsky comes with an orchestra of his native land and in the first part of the program he sings solely Russian music.” (…Demon, The Queen of Spades…) „The last piece, Borodin’s Prince Igor gives opportunity to Hvorostovsky again to show his heroic, masculine, refined voice in its full Russian grandeur.”
The second part: his most successful Verdi roles . „….all different characters and vocal demands (… )and the singer is able to identify with all of them: In the complicated course of life, a man becomes complex himself and finds in himself almost everything the roles would demand. Singing chamber music, loving art songs help the artist to elaborate the details. Also the fact, that Hvorostovsky is patient: he can wait for the right moment. In the case of Jago, for example, he had to wait for his deep register to mature. He had the heights all right, he used to consider being a tenor, too. My voice is a perfect instrument – he tells – I can be as lyrical as a tenor while I am singing bass roles. I do not have C, but I have H easily. This is why I am not a tenor. But to sing Jago’s A, I need a stable B or rather H. No problem.” This voice is perfect , true. Strong, full, resonant. His upper register is a special gift, just like his stature which launched him into the exclusive list of ’50 most beautiful people’ (People’s Magazin). Michelangelo’s dream – the proud Russians say about him. For them, he is the voice of Russia, and the right voice for the greatest Russian composers.
